Limiting Resistors

A current limiting resistor is a resistor that is used to reduce the current in a circuit. A simple example is a resistor in series with an LED. You would usually have a current limiting resisor in series with your LED so that you can control the amount of current through the LED.


Why do you need resitors?



The main functions of resistors in a circuit is to control the flow of current to other components. Take an LED for example. If too much current flows through an LED it is destroyed , a resistor is used to limit the current. Resistors are situated between conductors which conduct easily and insulators which do not conduct at all. Resistance is measured in ohms. The main functions of a resistor in a circuit is to control the flow of current to other components.


Without a resistor in your component, there would be to much flowing of ohms with no component to stop it from overflowing.

The biggest advantage of resistors are their ability to withstand high energy pulses.The body of the resistor conducts the energy completely.

Resistors are widely used in consumer electronics.
